Sankar foundation Eye Hospital, Visakhapatnam, A.P offers Fellowship in Comprehensive ophthalmology to provide a complete training in Medical and Surgical management of common ocular disorders.
Eligibility : MS/DNB/DO
Duration : 24 months for MS/DNB, 30 months for DO, and includes training in phacoemulsification during last 6 months of the programme.

Clinical Activity :
The fellows are trained to develop skills in clinical assessment and judgement, so as to deliver excellent patient care services. They are supervised and guided until they are capable to independently take care of patients confidently. They are trained in proper evaluation of patients by relevant history taking, complete examination and diagnosis. They are trained in
- Refraction, Keratometry, Lensometry and Biometry
- Diagnosis and Medical management of glaucoma
- Correct refractive errors, administer amblyopia therapy and know which strabismus patients to refer to pediatric ophthalmology
- Diagnose and follow diabetic retinopathy, refer for laser during necessity, and be able to pick up retinal breaks and conditions needing specialized retinal care
- First line management of uveitis, ordering and interpretation of tests, and being competent in indications for referral
- Understand the basics in diagnosis and management of disorders of eyelids, Adnexa and Orbit.
- To learn the complete evaluation of Neuro-ophthalmic conditions and to recognize when to refer.
- Management of ophthalmic emergencies
- Being competent at reading visual fields Performing retinal lasers, CT, MRI and other ocular diagnostic tools and will be posted in Cornea, Glaucoma, Retina and Gen Ophthalmology.
Surgery :
- Cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation including SICS, Phacoemulsification. 1000 SICS surgery will be given during the fellowship.
- Chalazion, small lid lesions
- Pterygium, anterior segment trauma, Trabeculectomy
During last 6 months of their training period they will be trained in phacoemulsification and will perform 50 surgeries.
Academics and Research :
The fellows will be actively involved in academic and research activity and daily classes. Theyl attend and actively participate in case presentations, seminars and journal club discussions. A research paper will be allotted to each fellow. They will submit protocols within 3 months, paper by 18 months and go forward for publication. They will participate in State/National Conferences.
They will be involved in training post graduate students.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma department of Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital serves patients with Glaucoma from Northern Andhra Pradesh and bordering Madhya Pradesh and Odisha.
Visual Field Analysis, OCT & UBM Imaging and Glaucoma Surgical facilities considered an essential requirement for basic and advanced clinical-surgical care, and even for the upgradation of skills are the forte of the department.
Well equipped with diagnostic and surgical facilities the hospital has grown into a favourite destination for surgical patients from surrounding districts, and as a referral centre to many of the Industries in and around the district.
Course Details :
Course training starts in a systematic and structured manner to support clinical and surgical needs of the fellows, with due regard to the safety and mandatory clinical requirements of the patients. Short duration Rotatory postings in General and Comprehensive Ophthalmology for 3 - 6 months enables an overview of all sub-specialties. Fellowship training program includes didactic lectures, various presentations, patient clinics, surgicals, clinical research, journal submissions and participation in outreach activities and hospital management programs.
Clinical Activity: :
Training program inculcates discipline for achievement of excellence in foundation of clinical skills including History, Slit Lamp Biomicroscopy, Applanation, Gonioscopy, imaging investigations and their functional and predictive correlations for diagnosis and management of various stages of glaucoma.
Surgery :
Lasers for Iridotomy, Trabeculectomy, Trabeculotomy, and Aqueous Shunts implants are part of the Glaucoma Specialty in a staged manner including wet-labs, guided-hand-on, supervised and independent stages. Cataract surgery is a regular part of the program and includes Small Incisional (SICS) surgery (800 Surgeries) in initial phase and Phaco-emulsification (30 surgeries) in the final 6 months.
Academics and Research :
The fellows will be actively involved in academic and research activity. The classes will be conducted daily. The fellows will attend and actively participate in case presentations, seminars and journal club discussions. Research paper(s) will be allotted to each fellow, with timelines being 3 months for protocol submission and 18 months for journal submission(s). Fellows participate in State / National Conferences for presentations and learning.
Once the fellows reach a certain calibre, they will be participating in training junior fellows and post graduate students with a further edge to learnings and insights.

Facilities:
Cornea department of Sankar Foundation eye hospital serves a large number of patients with corneal and ocular surface disorders from all over North Andhra and Odisha.
The Cornea specialists diagnose and manage different types of corneal diseases such as allergies, infections, degenerations, dystrophies, trauma etc. A wide spectrum of corneal ulcers are treated here, as most of the patients are from rural areas and outreach camps, with the help of medical management along with Therapeutic Keratoplasty.
A majority of patients suffering from Mechanical, Thermal & Chemical injuries are taken up for emergency management, as the Hospital is a referral centre for most of the Industries.
The Hospital is a centre for many transplant procedures as it has entered into an MOU with Ramayamma Eye Bank, Mohsin Eye bank and Badam Balakrishna Eye Bank to procure Corneoscleral Button and Amniotic membrane.
Keratoconus patients are diagnosed and managed with glasses, RGP and Collagen Cross Linking with Riboflavin.
Refractive errors are treated with glasses, contact lenses, LASIK/PRK and Phakic IOL.
Ocular surface disorder management includes proper evaluation and standard treatment protocols which include medical management, Punctual occlusion and surface reconstruction.

Clinical Activity :
The fellows are trained in :
- Development of skills in clinical assessment and judgement to deliver excellent patient care services. They are supervised and guided until they are capable of independent disposal of patients confidently.
- Proper evaluation of patients by relevant history taking, complete examination and diagnosis.
- OPD procedures like Corneal foreign body removal, ulcer scraping and KOH mount, Gram’s staining, Dry eye assessment etc.
- Interpretation of Specular microscopy, Pachymetry and Corneal Topography.
- In pre-refractive surgery evaluation, counselling and post procedure follow up. They are made responsible for registering &counselling of Keratoplasty patients. They are actively involved in eye donation campaigns. 6 months of their training period is in General ophthalmology,
- Comprehensive eye diseases diagnosis and management.
Surgery :
The fellows provide assistance and perform various surgeries in cornea such as Glue and BCL, Intracameral injections, Therapeutic Keratoplasty, Optical Keratoplasty, Lamellar Keratoplasty, CLAG, AMG Ocular surface Reconstruction, Corneal tear repair etc. They perform a minimum of 100 Pterygium surgeries with CLAG/AMG, 10 Optical Keratoplasties and 16 Therapeutic Keratoplasties.
They are given SICS in regular basis depending on their OT posting, throughout the fellowship period.
During last 6 months of their training period they will be trained in phacoemulsification and will perform 30surgeries.

Retina department of Sankar Foundation eye hospital serves a large number of patients with all types of Retina conditions from all over the North Andhra and Odisha.
The Retina specialists diagnose and manage different types of Retina conditions like retinal detachment surgeries, Posterior Vitrectomy for various conditions, manage various conditions of diabetic retinopathies, various Cataract related complications like Nucleous Drop, IOL drops, endophthlomitas, various conditions of retina, diagnosis and management.
Majorly being a referral centre many hospitals from 3 districts of Northern Andhra refer patients to Sankar Foundation for all types of retinal conditions.
Our retina department is provided with OCT, Laser Machine, D Scan, FFA to provide excellent services in medical retina and good training for DNB’S and fellows.

The fellows are trained to develop skills in clinical assessment and judgement, so as to deliver excellent patient care services. They are supervised and guided until they are capable to independently take care of patients with confidence, and are trained in proper evaluation of patients by relevant history taking, complete examination and diagnosis. They are trained in OPD procedures like 90D, indirect Opthelmoscopic examinations to diagnose various retinal conditions, B Scan and OCT interpretation, Lasers like PRP, Focal, Grid and Barrage laser. They are given a good exposure of Fundus FFA in diagnosis and management of diabetic retinopathy CSR vascular occlusions etc.,
Surgery :
The fellows will assist and perform various retinal surgeries like Hysterectomy, RD surgeries, IOL Drops, Nucleous Drops, IOFB removals, Co Vitrectomy Macula hole, ERN etc. They will be also well trained in intraveteral injections like Avastin, Lucentis antibiotics etc. Fellows from minor procedures are given opportunities to major surgeries during the concluding period of fellowship.

Pediatric Ophthalmology

Pediatric ophthalmology and squint department of Sankar foundation eye hospital serves a large number of children requiring refractive correction, children and adults with squint, all ophthalmic disorders in children including pediatric cataract from all over North Andhra and Odisha.
The pediatric ophthalmology specialists :
- Diagnose and manage different refractive errors in pre-school and school going children,
- Asthenopia symptoms, evaluation and management of squint both conservatively and surgically,
- Allergic disorders and infections in children.
We conduct regular school screening programs to identify the treatable and non-treatable conditions, and mostly treat refractive errors. Various community outreach programs are conducted (We train anganwadi workers in detecting eye problems in both verbal and pre-verbal children). Many children are referred to our hospital from anganwadis and remote villages with the support of local leaders and provide appropriate care & treatment.
Exclusive pediatric camps are conducted regularly to identify the treatable conditions and provide aids for children with low vision.
Sankar foundation eye hospital paediatric ophthalmology department is one amongst the large hospitals in providing care to most of the pediatric cataracts, pediatric glaucoma , squints and their post-op management. We detect pediatric cataracts at an early age, and provide appropriate management.
Amblyopia (lazy eye) – We detect it at an early age with the help of age appropriate vision charts and try to increase the compliance of the child towards management.
We check vision in various pre verbal children with all types of charts & cards considered appropriate for their age.
We perform optical iridectomy in appropriate patients and provide amblyopia management with full refractive correction.

They are trained in evaluating patients with squint, assessing preverbal children, amblyopia, Asthenopia, refractive errors and allergic disorders. Fellows are trained in assessing and managing congenital and developmental cataract both pre and post operatively. 6 months of their training period will be in General ophthalmology, with training in comprehensive eye diseases diagnosis and management.
Surgery :
The fellows will assist and perform various surgeries in pediatric and adults squints (both horizontal and vertical muscle surgeries) and pediatric cataract (includes performing anterior vitrectomy and PPC).
They will be given SICS (800 surgeries) in regular basis depending on their OT posting, throughout the fellowship period.
During last 6 months of their training period they will be trained in phacoemulsification and will perform 30 surgeries.
Academics and Research :
The fellows will be actively involved in academic and research activities with daily classes. The fellows will attend and actively participate in case presentations, seminars and journal club discussions. Orbit and Oculoplasty

Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital, Visakhapatnam, A.P offers Fellowship in Orbit and Oculoplasty to provide a training in Medical and Surgical management of disorders of lids, lacrimal apparatus and orbit.
Eligibility : MS/DNB/DO

Facilities :
The Fellows in Orbit and Oculoplasty are also given training in CATARACT SURGERIES –SICS (600 surgeries) and PHACO (20 surgeries) in the last 3 months of fellowship. The fellow will be posted in general ophthalmology for 4 months.
Various surgeries like LIDS: Chalazion, ectrpion, entropion correction, lid tumour excisions, PTOSIS correction with LPS resection, advancement or Sling surgery, lid reconstruction with flaps, grafts, tarsorrhaphy, LTS, repair of lid injuries. DCT,DCR with silicon intubation, canalicular repairs with Mini Monaka, probing Orbitotomy for tumours such as dermoids, adenoma, cysts etc., are done at Sankar Foundation Hospital
The Fellows are given training in a stepwise process of performing these surgeries under guidance.
The Fellows in Orbit and Oculoplasty are also given training in CATARACT SURGERIES –SICS and PHACO
Academics and Research :
