About the DNB Program
The Diplomate of the National Board (DNB) in Ophthalmology is a prestigious postgraduate residency program designed to produce highly competent ophthalmic specialists. Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital & Research Institute has been a recognized training center since 2008, maintaining excellent academic standards and clinical protocols.
Our DNB residents receive comprehensive exposure to all aspects of clinical, diagnostic, and surgical ophthalmology. Training is structured according to the guidelines of the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), New Delhi.

200-Bed Ophthalmic Facility
Intensive exposure to inpatient and outpatient clinical workflows across multiple specialized departments.
Advanced Operation Theatres
Eight modern OTs equipped with observer scopes, video display, and video recording systems for real-time surgical feedback.
Interactive Wet Lab
A dedicated wet lab facility where residents practice basic micro-incisions and suturing before performing live surgeries.
All Sub-Specialty Rotations
Rotations across Cataract, Glaucoma, Cornea, Vitreo-Retina, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Orbit & Oculoplasty.
Postgraduate Curriculum & Training
The three-year postgraduate training focuses on core clinical competency, academic presentation, and research:
Basic Sciences & Diagnostics
Ocular anatomy, physiology, optics, basic diagnostics (biometry, refraction), and observing/assisting in OTs.
Clinical Case Management
Handling OPD cases, performing extraocular surgeries, minor procedures, and beginning supervised SICS surgery.
Advanced Surgery & Research
Performing independent SICS, Phacoemulsification, assisting in vitreoretinal surgeries, and completing the thesis.
Academics & Research Projects
Academics are highly structured, featuring regular case presentations, journal club discussions, and guest lectures. Residents are required to complete a scientific thesis under the guidance of a senior consultant guide, submitting it to NBE for evaluation. Access to online libraries, digital journals, and academic resources is provided.
Admissions & Eligibility
Postgraduate seats are allotted through central counseling conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBEMS) based on NEET-PG scores.
